Best Times to Visit Raleigh

The best times to visit Raleigh are in the fall and spring. Both seasons feature comfortable temperatures and beautiful foliage, whether it's the vibrant reds and yellows of the fall or the fragrant and colorful blossoms of the spring. Winter tends to be cold, but the excitement of college basketball might mitigate the chilly weather. And summertime is usually characterized by stifling humidity.

September-November

In September, average high temperatures are in the low 80s, but by November the average low temperatures will hover in the 40s and 50s, making a warm coat a necessity. The fall foliage is brilliant here, so you'd be remiss if you didn't spend some time at the Umstead State Park or Pullen Park. And although rates for accommodations are rarely astronomically high in Raleigh, you might be able to find a slight price cut in room rates this time of year.

Key Events:

December-February

Winter is characterized by average temperatures that range from the freezing level to the lower 50s. But lots of locals keep warm by cheering for their favorite basketball teams: And there are several to choose from — the Tar Heels at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, the Blue Devils at Duke, the Wolfpack at North Carolina State or the Eagles at North Carolina Central University.

Key Events:

March-May

Temperatures make their annual ascension this time of year, with lows in the upper 30s in March increasing to highs in the upper 70s in May. Raleigh's host of parks perk up with green leaves and sweet-smelling blossoms. And a handful of quality festivals give springtime in Raleigh an even headier feel.

Key Events:

June-August

Average highs in the summertime rise into the 90s, and they tend to be accompanied by sweltering humidity. These months seem to move at a slower pace since many of the college students leave for at least part of the summer.
