Best Times to Visit Salzburg

The best time to visit Salzburg is from September to October when summer crowds have tapered off and you can enjoy the beautifully pruned gardens in comfortable temperatures. Although the hills begin to sing and bloom in spring, March and April are still a bit chilly. And summer's gorgeous weather brings increased traffic, temperatures and prices. Winter, though not unbearably cold, will encourage brisk walks through the few gardens that are open. And you'll be right at home if you're a skier, as the surrounding mountains welcome lots of snow. Whenever you go, bring an umbrella as precipitation is common throughout the year.

September-October Autumn is a serene time to visit. As the leaves start to change, the temperature stays relatively comfortable in the day — think upper 50s and 60s. And while you won't have the popular sites like the Mirabell Gardens to yourself, you'll have fewer tourists walking through your photos and will enjoy lower hotel rates.
November-February

Salzburg usually sees its first snow in November. Average temperatures dip as low as the 20s until they are revived in March. Some attractions and tours completely shut down for this low tourist season, while others reduce their hours. However, you can find some great deals on hotels (less than $150 USD per night) at some four-star properties. For winter sports enthusiasts, there are tons of ski resorts within an hour or two of the city.

March-April

Spring is slow to warm up; likewise, tourists are sluggish to travel here. Daily highs will be in the 50s, and there is a good chance of showers. The later in spring you go, the less opportunity you’ll have to ski; however, other attractions in town will extend their hours.

Key Events:

May-August

Summer weather is glorious. Fit for a king, Salzburg temperatures stay in the 60s and 70s. Flowers are in full bloom, but tourists are in full force. Tour buses clog the narrow roads, and people cram together in the public squares. This is also the rainiest reason, so pack a rain jacket. Hotel rates are highest now, so look carefully to find reasonable prices.
