Best Times to Visit Steamboat Springs
The best times to visit Steamboat Springs are between June and August and from December to March. Hikers and bicyclists will love exploring the area's trails in the summer, while skiers will find prime mountain conditions in the winter. But remember, tourists flock to Steamboat Springs between December and March, so hotel rates will generally be higher during these months, especially around the holidays. You'll want to secure your airfare and accommodations well in advance to ensure availability.
If you're sticking to a tight budget, consider arriving in late March or early April before the end of the ski season. You may also find a few hotel deals in January after holiday travelers have left. April and May – the city's shoulder months (or mud season) – are typically too wet for hiking, but hotel prices are significantly cheaper and attractions are not overrun with tourists. September, October and November also offer more elbow room, plus picturesque fall foliage. Room rates will increase, though, as the winter season nears.
Weather in Steamboat Springs
Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center
Although saving some money on lift tickets or activity packages is possible with advance bookings, expect high accommodation rates and crowded ski lifts during these peak ski months. You'll see the lowest temperatures in January, with some days falling below zero degrees. Average highs, however, are generally in the high 20s to low 40s. Snow is also common during these months, so rely on a four-wheel drive vehicle or a car with tire chains to get from point A to point B.
The skiing is still good in early April, making these weeks the most expensive time to visit during the mud season. Once the slopes close in mid-April, room rates drop and some eateries offer reduced meal prices (if they stay open). Daytime temperatures, on average, hover in the 50s and 60s, but frequent rain showers make outdoor activities like hiking and biking unpleasant. If you're set on staying active while in Steamboat Springs in April or May, play tennis on one of The Tennis Center's indoor courts or practice your ice skating at the Howelsen Ice Arena.
June is one of the most affordable and least crowded months of the year to visit. Though some attractions may be closed for servicing in preparation for the peak summer months, travelers who want to ride bikes or go for a hike will find dry and comfortable conditions, with average temperatures in the 70s. But once July rolls around, expect temps to soar into the low 80s. Hotel prices will also rise as visitors come for festivals hosted throughout July and August.
September, October and November make up Steamboat Springs' autumn shoulder season. Temperatures in September can range from the mid-30s to low 70s, making it still a pleasant time to go hiking. Leaf-peepers, meanwhile, will want to visit in October. By November, daytime temps will dip into the 40s, but evening temps will likely fall into the teens. The ski resorts open in late November, so expect a spike in accommodation rates for the Thanksgiving holiday.
