Best Times to Visit Sun Valley

The best times to visit Ketchum and Sun Valley are December through February and June through September. Peak skiing conditions occur during the winter months, with December in particular averaging 32 inches of snowfall per year. Meanwhile, biking and hiking enthusiasts flock to the small town during the summer. Between June and September, you can attend multiple concerts and festivals while enjoying temperatures that average more than 70 degrees during the day. The popular Trailing of the Sheep Festival happens in October, which is also an ideal time to witness peak fall foliage and spend time outside in a moderate climate. In shoulder months, such as March and April, you can usually still enjoy quality snow conditions without paying premium prices.

December-February

The prime season for Ketchum yields plenty of powder for skiers and snowboarders at the world-famous Sun Valley ski resort . Plus, visitors can try Nordic skiing or snowshoeing in the morning before exploring the vibrant town square at night. High temperatures hover around 30 degrees, while lows are usually below freezing, so it's best to pack layers and a warm jacket. And make sure you book your accommodations in advance if you want to visit during these months, as prices for flights and hotels can skyrocket quickly.

Key Events:

March-May

During the shoulder months of March and April, you can still find solid skiing conditions and a buzzing winter town. As the snow melts and the weather transitions into springtime conditions, Ketchum offers excellent opportunities for hiking in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area . High temperatures swing between the mid-40s and low 60s during this time period, and flight and hotel prices drop significantly (as much as 30 percent for some hotels in the area).

Key Events:

June-September

Once the weather heats up above 70 degrees between June and September, festivals and concerts abound in the town square, and bikers and hikers flock from around the country for picturesque views and world-class terrain. The gondola up Bald Mountain remains open during the summer months, so visitors can get a view from the top of the dry ski slopes and enjoy a meal without hiking for multiple hours.

Key Events:

October-November

The autumn months typically see temperatures drop back down into the 40s. However, this time period is ideal for observing fall foliage or for enjoying Ketchum's indoor activities, including the Sun Valley Museum of History . And before the snow starts to fall in mid-November, you'll want to get one last hike or fishing trip in at nearby wilderness areas or at a local trail. The Trailing of the Sheep festival, a popular event in Ketchum, occurs in October.
