Best Times to Visit The Poconos

The best times to visit the Poconos are in summer, fall and winter. Spring isn't necessarily a bad time to visit the Poconos, rates are the lowest during this period, but the shoulder season doesn't offer any unique activities. In comparison, summer provides the best weather for outdoor activities, with highs in the 70s. The area's scenic hikes and drives draw leaf peepers from around the world in autumn as the trees explode in color, and winter snow means that the Poconos' ski and snowboard areas open.

March-May

Early spring in the Poconos can be chilly, and March highs hover in the low 40s. Travelers who arrive early enough can take advantage of the end of the ski season. Highs reach the mid-60s by May, which proves the ideal temperature for strenuous hikes and bike and horseback rides. Additionally, spring visitors can participate in the Poconos' adventure courses and indoor water parks while saving money on their accommodations.

Key Events:

June-August

The Poconos welcome warm weather in summer, and temperatures climb into the 70s. The hotter weather allows for outdoor water-based activities like whitewater rafting, kayaking and swimming in addition to more run-of-the-mill outdoor activities ranging from adventure courses to scenic jaunts. As nighttime temperatures dip into the 50s, visitors can roast s'mores around a campfire. Summer also means NASCAR comes to the Pocono Raceway and attracts racing enthusiasts, while an assortment of fairs provide laid-back family fun.

Key Events:

September-November

The primary reason to visit the Poconos in fall is to take in the area's stunning foliage. Three distinct fall foliage color zones make up the Pocono Mountains, so the leaves begin turning mid-September and continue to attract leaf peepers through October. Visitors can choose to view the reds and oranges of autumn in various ways, including hiking and biking or on horseback and even train rides. Fall highs decrease from the upper 60s to the upper 40s, so the available activities depend on the exact month you choose to visit.

Key Events:

December-February

During winter, the Pocono Mountains transform into a winter wonderland. In addition to downhill skiing and snowboarding, visitors can cross-country ski, snowshoe or ride horses along the region's numerous trails. Winter highs hover in the 30s, while lows dip into the teens, so be sure to pack your cold-weather clothes. Also, keep in mind that in addition to powder snow, November ushers in the highest room rates.
