Best Times to Visit Traverse City

The best time to visit Traverse City is from June to August. The main reason for this is the weather. During this time, daytime highs hover in the mid-70s to 80s and sunshine is abundant. Fall is another great time to visit for the colorful foliage, as is spring for beautiful blooms, but because Traverse City sits so far up north right along the lake, you can expect cold temperatures through the rest of the year. If you are a fan of snow, you'll certainly enjoy a visit during winter, when you can ski, snowboard and sled, among other fun winter activities.

June-August

Because Traverse City can get pretty chilly anytime other than summer, the best time to take advantage of all its offerings – especially its beautiful natural attractions – is during the region's warmest months. The hottest month is July, which sees highs in the low 80s, making it the perfect time for the beach, while June and August tend to see temps in the high 70s. You should bring layers – at night, lows regularly to dip down to the 50-degree range. Another perk of summer is that you'll bear witness to the city's most popular festivals, including the National Cherry Festival and the Traverse City Film Festival.

Key Events:

September-November

Fall is a treat for visitors thanks to the city's spectacular foliage. There are plenty of hiking trails nearby as well as the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive within Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore to take in the scenery. It's also harvest season in wine country , so you can enjoy a glass of vino while watching grape growers collect their bounty. During this season, September is the warmest time to visit, with daytime highs in the low 70s and nighttime temps falling as low as 50 degrees. By October, you'll start to feel Michigan's chill, with highs in the upper 50s and low 40s. November dips down to highs in the low 40s and low 30s at night.

Key Events:

December-February

Bring all the layers you can if you plan to visit during winter. Traverse City is downright freezing during this time of year. In December, you can expect highs in the low 30s and lows in the low 20s. And during January and February, lows plummet to the teens. January sees highs in the low 20s; it gets a hair better in February with highs in the 30-degree range. The upside to these frigid winters? Snowfall! The city experiences between 10 and 12 feet of snow each year. In and around Traverse City travelers can go skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing (there's even a compatible trail in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore), cross-country skiing and fat tire biking.

Key Events:

March-May

After rough winters, Traverse City residents are rewarded for their perseverance with beautiful blooms. Not only do wildflowers pop up along the trails that make up Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, but the city's famous cherry orchards produce vibrant cherry blossom trees. If you are considering a visit during spring, be sure to time your visit around these specific blooms, which tend to start at the beginning of May. May welcomes highs in the upper 60s and lows in the low 40s. April and March are still relatively chilly, with April highs in the low 50s and March lows in the 20s.
