Best Times to Visit Wellington

The best time to visit Wellington is between March and May (the autumn shoulder season) when the weather is warm but the city isn't overcrowded. Winter, which spans from June to August, is considered low season, and it's typically characterized by strong gusty winds. The months between September and November are Wellington's springtime, while December, January and February constitute the peak summer season when families flock to Wellington on school breaks and holidays.

March-May

Visiting Wellington between the months of March and May will give you superb weather – with average highs slipping from the 60s to the upper 50s – without the high crowds (and high room rates) characteristic of New Zealand's summertime. However, rain showers become more prevalent as the season progresses, so remember to pack an umbrella. If you arrive at the start of fall, you can also catch part of several popular festivals, including Summer City and NZ Fringe.

Key Events:

June-August

The months between June and August are wintertime Down Under, and average temperatures in Wellington this time of year fluctuate between the 40s and 50s. These chilly temps are accompanied by gusty winds – which is why you might hear some locals refer to the city as "Windy Welly." Still, because it's low season, traveling in June, July and August will enable you to enjoy many of the top things to do without the tourist hordes characteristic of other times of the year.

Key Events:

September-November

Spring in Wellington can be a lovely time to visit, with average temperatures rising from the 40s and 50s in September to the 50s and 60s by November. Still, September, October and November aren't strangers to gray days and wind, either. Should you decide to visit in September, make time for a stroll through the Wellington Botanic Garden. This month is when the attraction's colorful tulips are in bloom.

Key Events:

December-February

You'll find that tourism in Wellington is at its peak during the months that span December to February. You can almost depend on long days filled with sunshine and moderate daytime temps that are generally in the upper 60s to low 70s. February is the hottest month of the year.
