Super itinerary

Nov 2nd, 2018

Lovely itinerary with the benefit of Mediterranean sunshine too. We sailed through the Messina straits which separate Italy and Sicily during the day and had wonderful views.

Enjoyable experience

Enjoyable cruise with a good ratio of sea days and stops. Most passengers were retirees but we expected that due to the length of cruise & time of year. Ship was easy to get around and the daytime lectures were interesting & engaging. Food was good although menus could be a bit limited/repetitive. Ship had a few issues with burst pipes & water supply issues but as she is due for a refit I expect that will be sorted by Christmas. Cabin was comfortable with plenty of storage, we were next to a pantry area and although we occasionally heard movement in there it wasn't intrusive or frequent enough to spoil our enjoyment or disturb our sleep.

Sydney is the perfect harbour. Evening cocktails in the Commodore's Lounge was the best. Very enlightening educational talks in the theatre. Wonderful high teas in the Queen's Room. Great pub lunches every day in the Red Lion Pub. Luxurious balcony cabin. Staff and food were top notch.

Of the twelve cruises we have taken this one ranks at the bottom. Not everything was terrible, but the exceptions were few. The good: Probably the easiest boarding we have had. There was no confusion, no running around looking for something. The boarding process probably lasted fifteen minutes. The ships overall appearance and décor was exceptional. The look of wood with all the trimmings made you feel comfortable and very warm. For a ship just refurbished two years ago there is a lot of wear and tear. The bad: The staff appears more disinterested than any other ship we have sailed. On most of the ships we have cruised there seems to be an attitude of making you feel like a guest, far less on this ship. The lido staff is downright unfriendly. On many occasions a staff member removed either a plate of glass from the table, we would say thank you, just to be ignored. Problem solving seems to be absent. Our transfer from the ship to the airport was arranged by the excursions department. Heathrow airport is one of the largest in the world. I stopped by the desk to verify the correct terminal. I was told I would have to go the library upstairs log onto a computer, at my cost, to verify the correct terminal. Only after leaving I decided this was not right and returned to the counter just in time to find another associate giving her instructions on how to find this information. Two questions, one why was someone new not given instructions on how to handle questions, and second why not try to get the guest to return. The ugly: Our booking agent had us select the 8:30 dining saying “they have open seating like other ships, just request other dining times”. When we asked the Maître D about open seating we were informed not on any Cunard. Not solving the problem then he haughtily told us to return on the following day and he “would see what he could do”. Makes you really feel like a guest. Tendering. On two occasions we tendered into port. First being Edinburgh. Along with the ships tenders we also had a large ship used for this purpose aiding in the process. Even with the larger ship there was still a delay over an hour and a half. The second was in Guernsey. This was a horrible experience, with over a three and a half delay. Some people waited over four hours. Very poor planning.

This ship centers everything around ballroom dancing even afternoon tea. The bars where very quiet no lively ones anywhere. Jacket compulsory for men every night even for most of the bars. Women in long dresses on formal nights in the minority only about 10% on this cruise to Norway then around the UK it had a very old clientele; made my husband and myself at 75 & 72 feel like spring chickens! Never seen so many women wearing tights and sandals ????. Food was good but not as much choice as some ships. The theater has no facilities for drinks not even a cup holder so if you take one be prepared to hold it for the whole performance. The stateroom corridors are stark and boring not a photo or picture to be seen anywhere; never been on any other ship that doesn’t have some interesting artwork to break up the long boring walks we all seem to do in these corridors. Norway was beautiful and the ship organized some good trips. We had the offer to stay on to Rotterdam - 2 extra nights on the ship - for £300 less than if we disembarked at Southampton where we got on : work that one out !! Ship was nowhere near full in July guess they wanted bums on seats as it doesn’t look good to have empty dining rooms. We don’t ballroom dance, a waltz is our limit but with so many good dancers we didn’t feel comfortable taking to the floor. It’s the 1st time we have been Cunard and overall we were disappointed it didn’t have the wow factor I expected. Have heard too many cruisers say “Oh we prefer Cunard it’s so much better”. We had a balcony cabin which was nice but not any nicer than any of the other 23 cruises that we have been on and there is no freedom dining unless you are in a grill suite. Set dining is 6:00 or 8:30 shows are 8:30 and 10:30 there is no early show, therefore, if you are in 8:30 dining and go to the show it’s midnight every night before you go to bed and most of the trips went early in the mornings. Wouldn’t choose Cunard again didn’t think it was good value compared to say Celebrity Aqua Class where you have the Blue Dining room with freedom dining where we never book just walk in; true sometimes you have to wait but they give you a buzzer. You can also reserve a table for a specific time. The presentation of the food is far superior to that in the Queen Elizabeth’s Britannia Dining Room. I am a white wine drinker and one thing that really bugged me is the Britannia dining room serve all wines in the same large glass which is good for red to breath but white wine gets warm too quick.

We enjoyed this cruise. The ports of La Rochelle and Gijon were very industrial and far from the city. Ship was very clean and service was excellent.
