Cuba was disappointing

Nov 20th, 2018

Did this for Cuba and the Tropicana. Get Euros or Canadian Dollars at home before you go and not get penalized the extra 10% US Dollar exchange fee on top of the regular 3%. Know as close as possible how much you will need in cash as the exchange at the port closes at 8pm, so if your ship stays late, you are stuck with the CUC’s (This is the Cuban Tourist Currency pronounced “kooks”). HAL will scare you to death on the “legalities” of getting off the boat and selling extra safe excursions. No one checks anything accept Visa ($75 US) and passport getting off at first, then you can do whatever you please.

Mixed Feelings

Oct 24th, 2018

Older ship but good itinerary. I was looking forward to Sweet Potato fries at the Dive In and was disappointed when told they did not do them ... only regular fries available. Because I am a four star Mariner and complained they made them available to me but when friends requested them they were told there were none to be had.

nice cruise of Canada/New England and East Coast

Oct 21st, 2018

We traveled with another couple. Enjoyed the Veendam and the ports. Our weather was not good, but we enjoyed the entertainment, etc on board. Loved the Cruise Director Becca Newton. Enjoyed Team Trivia. Enjoyed the Lido Market for most meals. Breakfast in the Rotterdam Dining Room was especially nice.

Lovely ports of call, good basic cruise.

Oct 12th, 2018

The ship was clean and in great condition. The service is very good everywhere. The food is OK, nothing outstanding, nothing bad. Everything seems to be an upcharge so the price of the cruise adds up quickly. They evidently force the housekeeping staff to come to your room on the last night to beg for a "10" rating or else they will be fired (so they say), that's incredibly awkward. Overall, it's a good cruise and the ports of call are lovely.

Fall colors

Oct 8th, 2018

I don't think I would ever do this cruise again. It is just too hit and miss as far as seeing the fall foliage, and the weather can be suspect. We were not able to visit Prince Edward Island due to weather, which was the one stop we were really looking forward to.

Nice - geriatric trip

Sep 9th, 2018

We enjoyed this cruise and the ports. Honestly, we are calling this the geriatric cruise. I haven't seen so many walkers, canes and scooters in one place! I think there were 6 guest younger than my husband and me (we are 50's); most guests were 80 and above. Frankly, I think we could have stayed on the ship in Halifax, Sydney and Charlottetown. Bar Harbor and Quebec were FANTASTIC! Too many things that we wanted to do, but did not have the time! We are thinking of going back, but only to Bar Harbor and Quebec so we could stay and visit longer.

overall good to fair; great staff

Aug 28th, 2018

Even though my comments as I reread them are pretty negative it was a good cruise. We gambled every night (and lost every night:-) but the dealers and pit bosses and the manager, Corina were all very pleasant- It is a small casino but if there was not a table open (blackjack) they would open one for us. Minimum smoking in the casino - by certain slot machines only. Food in the Pinnacle was cold at breaKfast but, again staff very pleasant. Dinner in the Pinnacle (filet) was very good. Our room stewards, Romy and Agung were EXCELLENT and our suite was kept immaculate. Our concierge, Mary, was very helpful in many ways (We never know how much to tip) And, Fatima, who we did not see that often was also very nice. Our waiters at night Jimmy and Moises were also very good even though they had too many people to care for. And even though we don't drink we met Micky, the wine steward, who would come over and talk to us each night. Again, a very pleasant staff with the one exception that I mentioned - Albert, the Executive Housekeeper)

Port-heavy but relaxing Maritimes cruise

Aug 27th, 2018

Embarkation was smoother than any previous cruise but the disembarkation was delayed about an hour. This was through no fault of the cruiseline and I feel like they dealt with it as best as they could. The ports kept us busy but if I were to do this itinerary again I would spend more time on the ship. Had read some other reviews and was worried the ship would feel crowded but honestly, felt like I saw many less people than on the Nieuw Amsterdam. Except for the 8pm shows. Those were standing room only!
