American Airlines AAdvantage Membership

Membership Levels

The AAdvantage program features basic membership and elite status membership. Elite membership is divided into four classes: AAdvantage Gold, AAdvantage Platinum, AAdvantage Platinum Pro and AAdvantage Executive Platinum. An invitation-only program called ConciergeKey is also available for AAdvantage's most loyal customers. The number of EQSs or EQMs you accrue, in addition to the EQDs you earn, determines your membership status.

Basic Membership

Benefits include:

  • Ability to earn and use points

The American Airlines AAdvantage program allows you to earn 5 award miles for every dollar spent on American and American Eagle flights, as well as American Airlines-marketed or codeshare flights and oneworld partner flights. Plus, you'll earn EQDs, EQSs and EQMs for every mile flown, the number of which depends on the fare class purchased. Members are guaranteed to accrue a minimum of 500 EQMs (or 250 EQMs when booking basic economy fares) for flights less than 500 miles on American Eagle, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines and oneworld flights. (However, the only Alaska Airlines flights that qualify for EQMs are those that have an "AA" flight number and are reserved on the American Airlines website.) Keep in mind, free seat assignments won't be available before check-in for basic economy fares. As a basic member, you can use your award miles toward flights, upgrades, Admirals Club lounge memberships, vacation packages, car rentals, hotel stays and other retail products.

AAdvantage Gold

Benefits include:

  • Ability to earn and use points
  • Free checked bags
  • Priority boarding/seating
  • Free cabin upgrades
  • Expedited security

After spending $3,000 EQDs and earning either 25,000 EQMs or 30 EQSs within one calendar year, you will become an AAdvantage Gold member. With Gold status, you earn 7 award miles per dollar spent (or a 40% mileage bonus). You'll receive one complimentary checked bag per flight and unlimited auto-requested upgrades for full-priced tickets for flights 500 miles or less (confirmed up to 24 hours before your departure), plus priority check-in, security screenings and boarding on American and American Eagle flights. You'll also receive priority check-in and standby on oneworld partner flights. Additionally, Gold members can receive a complimentary preferred seat or a free Main Cabin Extra seat within 24 hours of departure (when available). Other perks include four complimentary cabin upgrades on flights longer than 500 miles for every 12,500 EQMs earned, free same-day standby, one upgrade for a companion when using an earned or purchased 500-mile upgrade, and waived award processing charges. You'll also have access to an elite service desk, a discounted fee for Admirals Club lounge membership, reduced rates for select partner services and Ruby status in oneworld's loyalty program.

Note: Complimentary or discounted preferred or Main Cabin Extra seats, cabin upgrades and same-day standby are not available for Gold members who purchase basic economy tickets. You also won't receive a seat assignment until you check in unless you pay for one in advance.

The Gold membership period lasts from either Feb. 1 or the day you qualify through Jan. 31 of the following year. To retain your Gold status, you must meet minimum tier requirements from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. If you accrue 1 million total miles, you'll retain Gold status for life and receive 35,000 award miles.

AAdvantage Platinum

Benefits include:

  • Ability to earn and use points
  • Free checked bags
  • Priority boarding/seating
  • Free cabin upgrades
  • Expedited security
  • Lounge access

Once you've spent $6,000 EQDs and accrued 50,000 EQMs or 60 EQSs in a year, you will become an AAdvantage Platinum member. Platinum status earns you 8 award miles per dollar spent (or a 60% mileage bonus). This tier also grants you all the benefits of Gold status, as well as free business-class and frequent flyer lounge access in oneworld partner airport lounges. Additionally, you will receive priority security screenings and boarding on oneworld partner flights. Platinum status also grants you Sapphire status in oneworld's loyalty program, priority baggage delivery, free Main Cabin Extra seats (when booked in advance or at check-in), two complimentary checked bags and confirmed cabin upgrades as early as 48 hours before your departure time. Plus, you and one guest will receive free access to Flagship Lounges before select international American or oneworld partner flights.

Remember, free cabin upgrades, same-day standby and preferred or Main Cabin Extra seats are not offered to Platinum members who book basic economy tickets. These fares also keep you from receiving a free seat assignment before check-in.

Platinum membership lasts from either Feb. 1 or the day you qualify through Jan. 31 of the following year. However, you must requalify between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 to keep your Platinum status for another year. Collect 2 million miles in your time as a member and you'll earn lifetime Platinum status and four one-way systemwide upgrades, which can each be used for up to three flight segments on American Airlines and American Eagle flights. Each additional million miles accrued will grant you four more system-wide upgrades.

AAdvantage Platinum Pro

Benefits include:

  • Ability to earn and use points
  • Free checked bags
  • Priority boarding/seating
  • Free cabin upgrades
  • Expedited security
  • Lounge access

Spending $9,000 EQDs and collecting 75,000 EQMs or 90 EQSs will grant you AAdvantage Platinum Pro status. As a Platinum Pro member, you will receive all Platinum benefits, plus complimentary same-day flight changes and unlimited auto-requested upgrades on any flight, which are confirmed within 72 hours of your departure time. You will also collect 9 miles for every dollar spent (or an 80% mileage bonus).

If you book a basic economy-class ticket, you will not have access to free same-day standby, same-day confirmed flight changes, cabin upgrades and preferred or Main Cabin Extra seats. What's more, you will not know your seat assignment until you check in if you do not reserve one ahead of time for a fee.

The membership period for Platinum Pro status lasts from either Feb. 1 or the day you qualify through Jan. 31 of the following year. Keeping your Platinum Pro benefits an additional calendar year requires requalifying between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31.

AAdvantage Executive Platinum

Benefits include:

  • Ability to earn and use points
  • Free checked bags
  • Priority boarding/seating
  • Free cabin upgrades
  • Expedited security
  • Lounge access

You'll obtain AAdvantage Executive Platinum when you spend $15,000 EQDs and earn either 100,000 EQMs or 120 EQSs. As an Executive Platinum member, you will continue to enjoy all the benefits of Platinum Pro status and earn 11 points per dollar spent on flights (or a 120% mileage bonus). Plus, you will receive complimentary upgrades on award tickets, waived award change and reinstatement charges, more award seat availability and cabin upgrade confirmations as early as 100 hours before your flight departs. Additional airport benefits like free first-class lounge access in oneworld partner lounges and three complimentary checked bags are provided. What's more, you'll earn waived ticketing service charges and waitlist priority for purchased first- and business-class seats. And in the main cabin, which is guaranteed to be available, you'll receive a free snack and alcoholic beverage.

Executive Platinum members who purchase a basic economy ticket will not qualify for complimentary same-day standby, preferred or Main Cabin Extra seats, cabin upgrades and same-day confirmed flight changes. Free seat assignments are also unavailable until you check in.

The Executive Platinum membership period lasts from either Feb. 1 or the day you qualify through Jan. 31 of the following year. You'll have to requalify every year from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 to maintain your Executive Platinum status.
