Membership Levels

The Delta SkyMiles program is divided into two categories: general SkyMiles membership and Medallion elite membership. The Medallion program is then split into four classes: Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond.

Basic Membership

Benefits include:

  • Ability to earn and use points

When members sign up for the Delta SkyMiles loyalty program, they'll receive 5 miles for every dollar spent on a Delta, Delta Connection or Delta Shuttle trip; SkyMiles members can also earn rewards by traveling with one of Delta's partner airlines or purchasing travel-related services through any of the airline's hotel, cruise or ground transportation affiliates. General SkyMiles members also can acquire a CLEAR membership for a discounted annual fee of $99. But that is the extent of general program benefits. If you book a basic economy fare, you will not know your seat assignment before check-in. As you accrue frequent flyer miles, you will also earn MQMs and MQSs, one of which you will need to achieve Medallion status. In addition to frequent travel, you will also need to spend a certain amount of money to achieve Medallion status – the amount you need to spend for each elite level is measured in MQDs.

Silver Medallion

Benefits include:

  • Ability to earn and use points
  • Free checked bags
  • Priority boarding/seating
  • Free cabin upgrades

Once you've earned 25,000 MQMs (or 30 MQSs) and spent $3,000 MQDs, you will become a Silver Medallion member. As a Silver member, you will have access to such perks as free checked baggage for you and up to eight travel companions; priority check-in, waitlist status and boarding; unlimited complimentary U.S. 50 Delta One upgrades on the day of departure; and unlimited free first-class and Delta Comfort+ upgrades 24 hours before your flight. Additionally, you'll receive unlimited complimentary Clase Premier upgrades on select Aeromexico flights and unlimited Delta upgrades for one companion. Silver members also collect 1,000 miles per qualifying Hertz car rental and can enjoy a CLEAR membership at a discounted rate of $79 per year. (However, Silver members who book basic economy fares will not receive seat assignments before check-in or free seat upgrades.) After achieving Silver status, you will also earn 7 miles per dollar spent on flights. You will continue to accrue MQMs, and they will never expire, plus any excess MQMs will rollover to the next year to help you qualify for higher status. You will need to meet minimum qualification requirements each year to maintain Silver status.

Gold Medallion

Benefits include:

  • Ability to earn and use points
  • Free checked bags
  • Priority boarding/seating
  • Free cabin upgrades
  • Expedited security
  • Lounge Access

You need 50,000 MQMs (or 60 MQSs) and $6,000 MQDs to achieve Gold Medallion status. As a Gold member, you will receive all the benefits of Silver membership, plus extras like the ability to earn 8 miles per dollar spent; waived standby and direct ticketing fees; priority security line access; expedited baggage service; and free access to SkyTeam lounges in airports around the world. Free seat upgrades will also become available as soon as 72 hours before your departure date. (Gold members who book basic economy fares do not receive seat assignments prior to check-in or free seat upgrades.) Gold Medallion members receive Five Star status in the Hertz rental car loyalty program as well. You will need to meet the MQM (or MQS) and MQD requirements each calendar year in order to remain a Gold member.

Platinum Medallion

Benefits include:

  • Ability to earn and use points
  • Free checked bags
  • Priority boarding/seating
  • Free cabin upgrades
  • Expedited security
  • Lounge Access

After accruing 75,000 MQMs (or 100 MQSs) and spending $9,000 MQDs, you will become a Platinum Medallion member. The second-highest tier of the Medallion program comes with all the benefits of the Gold status, plus the ability to earn 9 miles per dollar spent, as well as a Choice Benefits welcome gift – you can pick from four regional upgrade certificates, a $200 Delta or Tiffany & Co. gift card, a Global Entry application voucher, 20,000 bonus miles or gifting Silver Medallion status to a friend or family member. You'll also receive waived change fees for award flights and complimentary upgrades shortly after ticketing or as many as 120 hours before your departure date, depending on the seat type. (Note: Platinum members who book basic economy fares will not have access to seat assignments before check-in or free seat upgrades.) Plus, Platinum members receive President's Circle status in the Hertz rental car loyalty program and can earn 1,250 miles per qualifying vehicle rental. To maintain Platinum status, you must requalify annually.

Diamond Medallion

Benefits include:

  • Ability to earn and use points
  • Free checked bags
  • Priority boarding/seating
  • Free cabin upgrades
  • Expedited security
  • Lounge access

Earning and maintaining Diamond Medallion status – the highest membership level of Delta's Medallion program – requires 125,000 MQMs (or 140 MQSs) and $15,000 MQDs per year. Once you've accrued enough MQMs and MQDs, you will receive all the Platinum-level Medallion perks, plus you'll earn 11 miles per dollar spent and your pick of three Choice Benefits welcome gifts, such as 25,000 bonus miles, four global or eight regional upgrade certificates (or two global and four regional certificates), two Global Entry application vouchers, Delta Sky Club membership and gifting Gold Medallion status. You'll also receive a complimentary CLEAR membership. But remember, Diamond members do not receive seat assignments before check-in or free seat upgrades when booking basic economy fares. Keeping your Diamond status requires meeting minimum qualification requirements each year.
