Earning Points

As a Somebody member, you will earn half a mile for every mile flown with Spirit; you'll earn 1 mile for every mile flown if you're an Elite or VIP member. You must provide your Free Spirit membership account number when booking to be awarded credit. However, if you forget to provide your membership number at the time of booking, you may request mileage credit be added to your account for previous flights flown up to 30 calendar days after your reservation. Mileage credit may not be given for industry discounted fares or tickets booked with award credit.

You may also earn 250 miles for each stay at a Choice Hotels-affiliated property. And thanks to Spirit's partnerships with Hertz, Budget and Avis, as well as cruise lines like Royal Caribbean International and Carnival Cruise Line, you can collect miles on car rentals and cruise vacations. Spirit's alliance with 10,000-plus dining establishments also allows you to accumulate up to 5 miles per dollar spent at select bars, clubs and restaurants. You'll receive additional miles for purchases made on the Free Spirit Online Mall website and for signing up for shopping services with program partners like Swagbucks and Vinesse Wine Club. And if you are a Spirit Airlines credit card holder, you can earn an additional 2 miles per dollar spent on everyday purchases. You must earn miles every three months or your points will expire.

Using Points

Spirit's network spans across the United States, Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean. To use miles toward future air travel on Spirit, you must make your reservations through the Spirit Airlines website for free or by phone with a reservation specialist (for a $35 fee). Award redemption charges also apply for flights booked fewer than 180 days in advance. The award redemption charge costs $15 for flights booked between 21 and 179 days in advance, $75 for flights booked between seven and 20 days in advance and $100 for flights booked six days in advance or later. The number of miles required for award travel depends on your membership status, your route and when you choose to fly. Below you'll find the minimum number of miles needed (as of July 2019) to cover a round-trip flight on six of Spirit's most popular routes:

Route Lowest calculated round-trip cost (in points)
Las Vegas - Los Angeles 35,000
Las Vegas - San Diego 35,000
Los Angeles - Fort Lauderdale, Florida 30,000
New York - Las Vegas 75,000
Los Angeles - Dallas 35,000
Las Vegas - Minneapolis 55,000

The calculated costs shown above are based on booking searches conducted by U.S. News in July 2019. We analyzed 12 of each airline's highly trafficked routes within three round-trip mileage categories: short domestic, medium domestic and long for three different round-trip dates between July and September.

Free Spirit members can also redeem miles for magazine subscriptions. Available titles include Travel + Leisure magazine, People magazine and Sports Illustrated magazine.
